How to use

Using this tool

Ever wondered exactly how many days you've been alive, or needed to verify someone's age for a legal document? Our Age Calculator gives you a precise breakdown in years, months, days, hours, and minutes from any birth date you provide. It accounts for leap years and varying month lengths automatically, so the results are always accurate.

Whether you're planning a birthday party, verifying age for a membership application, or simply curious about your own milestone dates, this tool handles it all without requiring any sign-up or storing any personal information.

What is Age Calculator?

The Age Calculator is a free online utility that computes the exact elapsed time between any two dates — your date of birth and a target date of your choice. Unlike simple year-only calculators, it performs full calendar arithmetic to account for leap years, 28-day Februarys, and months with 30 or 31 days.

All calculations run locally in your browser using pure JavaScript. Your birth date is never sent to our servers, never logged, and never stored — close the tab and the data is gone forever. This makes it safe for sensitive personal information.

How to Use

  1. Enter your date of birth using the month/day/year fields or calendar picker that pops up.
  2. Optionally enter a specific target date if you want the age as of a particular day rather than today. Leave blank to use today.
  3. Click the Calculate Age button to perform the computation.
  4. Instantly see your age broken down into years, months, days, hours, and minutes below the input fields.

Examples

Example 1: Birth date January 15, 1990 calculated on August 6, 2025 gives 35 years, 6 months, and 22 days. The tool automatically handles 9 leap years between 1990 and 2024 (1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024).

Example 2: Someone born on Christmas Day 2000 (December 25) will be exactly 25 years old on December 25, 2025, with 9,131 total days lived — including the 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020 leap days that fall within their lifetime.

Example 3: A project starting March 1, 2020 and ending October 8, 2026 has an age of exactly 6 years, 7 months, and 7 days. March 1, 2026 had already passed, so we're 7 full months into year 7.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does the Age Calculator handle leap years?

The tool performs day-level arithmetic — counting actual calendar days between two dates. When it encounters February 29 (which exists only in leap years divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400), it includes or excludes it accordingly. This means someone born on February 28 will show their age incrementing by one year on March 1 in non-leap years, while a February 29 birthday person celebrates on February 28 or March 1 depending on convention.

Q: Is my birth date stored or sent anywhere?

No — this is critical. The calculator runs entirely on the client side using Web Crypto API math and native JavaScript Date objects. Your birth date never leaves your browser, never hits our servers, and is completely forgotten once you close the tab or navigate away.

Q: Can I use this calculator for legal purposes?

While the mathematics are accurate to the calendar day, official government identification, certified birth certificates, or vital records remain the authoritative source for legal age verification. Use this tool for informational and planning purposes, and consult official documents for legal matters.

Q: Why does my age change slightly throughout the day?

If you enter a time component (birth time in HH:MM), the calculator will show hours and minutes. As the current clock advances throughout the day, those fractional components will tick forward. The year/month/day portion changes only at midnight local time.

Q: Can I calculate the age difference between two people?

Yes — calculate each person's age separately, or enter one birth date and the other birth date as the target date to see their exact age gap. Negative results mean the \"target person\" is older than the baseline.

Tips for Best Results

  • Enter the approximate time of birth for hour- and minute-level precision — useful for birth announcements or astrology enthusiasts.
  • Use the target date field to pre-calculate milestone ages (18, 21, 30, 40, 50, 65, 100) years in advance.
  • The calculator also works backwards — enter a future date to see how old you'll be then, or a past date to see how old you were at historical events.
  • Bookmark this page if you regularly calculate ages for family members, team members, or project timelines.
  • For very young children under 2 years old, the tool shows age in months and days which is more intuitive than partial years.
